Macho No Machismo

Students at Robertson Elementary were treated to a special visit by bilingual author Miguel A. Briones, who came to present his recent children’s book: Macho No Machismo.

Through his “macho” acting, guitar and singing performance, and personal discussion, Mr. Briones was able to connect to our students and demonstrate some of the differences between being a macho and being machismo. In today’s world of repressing emotions, being tough, and never asking for help, this message is vitally important to students: “Machos are mighty and know that they’re strong, so they’re gentle with others and don’t use it for wrong.” The lesson, that you can be tough and strong, yet still gentle, is one that students are learning in their daily interactions with peers, staff, and families. And because the author and the book are both bilingual, this performance had a more complete connection with our students.

At the conclusion of his reading, Mr. Briones offered a brief Q&A session for the students, where students had the opportunity to ask him about writing and publishing his book, pursuing their own creative interests, and his inspiration for writing his books. Many students left with ideas for their own books, and the motivation to get started!
