Exploring the World of Rot: A First Grade Science Adventure

Welcome to the fascinating world of science with our first-grade students! Today, we’re excited to share an amazing journey Ms. Wren’s class embarked on: investigating the magic of a rotting pumpkin.

The Adventure Begins

As curious scientists, our first graders delved into the mysterious process of decomposition by observing a rotting pumpkin up close. With wide eyes and eager hearts, they set out to discover what happens when nature takes its course.

Observation and Discovery

Armed with magnifying glasses and notebooks, our young scientists closely examined the pumpkin, noting changes in color, texture, and smell. They observed how tiny organisms, like bacteria and fungi, worked their magic, breaking down the pumpkin into compost.

Making Connections

Through this hands-on project, our first graders not only honed their observation skills but also made connections to important science concepts outlined in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for first grade:

Science Process Skills (TEKS 1.1): Students engaged in observation, prediction, and communication as they documented changes in the pumpkin.

Living Organisms and their Environment (TEKS 1.10): By studying decomposition, students explored the roles of living organisms in ecosystems and their impact on the environment.

Properties of Matter (TEKS 1.5): Through the pumpkin’s decay, students learned about changes in states of matter and the transformation of materials.

The Magic of Science

As our adventure comes to an end, our first graders have gained a deeper understanding of the natural world around them. They’ve witnessed firsthand the beauty and importance of decomposition in sustaining life on our planet.

Conclusion

As our first-grade science adventure comes to a close, we’re filled with awe at the wonders of the natural world. Through this exploration of a rotting pumpkin, our young scientists have not only learned valuable lessons but have also sparked a lifelong curiosity about the world around them. We encourage you to join us in nurturing their inquisitive minds, fostering a love for discovery, and embracing the joy of learning together. Let’s continue exploring, questioning, and celebrating the marvels of science every day!
